Abstract

This thesis examines the representation of nature and human–environment relations in English and Uzbek literature from an ecocritical perspective. Its central argument is that nature in literary texts should not be understood merely as a decorative background or a source of poetic imagery. It can function as an active component of human identity, memory, moral consciousness, cultural belonging, and social experience. The thesis compares selected aspects of William Wordsworth’s nature poetry with the nature-oriented poetic world of Abdulla Oripov. Although the two poets belong to different historical, geographical, and cultural contexts, their works demonstrate a common recognition that human experience is inseparable from the physical environment. Wordsworth frequently presents nature as a force that shapes individual consciousness and moral development, whereas Oripov often connects landscape with homeland, cultural memory, national belonging, and spiritual values. The thesis also considers the relevance of ecocritical interpretation to contemporary Uzbek literary studies, particularly in relation to environmental consciousness and the cultural significance of the Aral Sea crisis. The findings indicate that comparative ecocriticism provides a productive way of rereading English and Uzbek literature and demonstrates how literary representations of place contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationship between human beings and the natural world.
