Developing Critical Thinking In Grade 7 Physics Through Tasks Aligned With International Assessment Requirements

This conference paper examines a methodological approach to developing Grade 7 students’ critical-thinking competence in physics through tasks aligned with international assessment principles. The approach is based on progressively structured questions, graphical and diagram-based problems, laboratory activities, real-life contexts, and criterion-referenced assessment supported by mark schemes. The proposed task system moves learners beyond recall by requiring them to interpret data, apply physical laws, justify answers, identify cause-and-effect relationships, analyze experimental results, and formulate evidence-based conclusions. Particular attention is given to task formats consistent with the logic of Cambridge Lower Secondary Science, TIMSS cognitive domains, and PISA-oriented application of knowledge in authentic contexts. Examples from mechanics, pressure, thermal phenomena, electricity, and optics illustrate how multi-stage tasks can integrate conceptual understanding, calculation, graphical interpretation, and scientific explanation. The paper argues that transparent assessment criteria and structured feedback can support both objective evaluation and students’ reflection on their own reasoning. The approach may therefore serve as a practical framework for competency-based physics instruction in lower-secondary education.
