Abstract

This study addresses the production technology and industrial application of polymer-modified bitumen emulsions (PMBE), which combine the environmental and economic advantages of cold-applied bitumen emulsions with the enhanced mechanical performance provided by polymer modification. Two principal manufacturing routes are compared: post-addition of a polymer latex (most commonly styrene–butadiene rubber, SBR) to a finished cationic bitumen emulsion, and pre-blending of the polymer (such as styrene–butadiene–styrene, SBS) into the bitumen prior to emulsification. The influence of polymer type, dosage, and compatibility on emulsion viscosity, storage stability, elastic recovery, and residual binder cohesion is analyzed. Industrial applications reviewed include surface dressing, slurry seal and micro-surfacing, tack coats for high-stress interlayers, and cold in-place recycling, where the elastomeric network formed by the polymer improves resistance to rutting, thermal cracking, and moisture damage. The findings indicate that careful matching of polymer chemistry to the base bitumen and emulsifier system is essential to avoid phase separation and to achieve the full performance benefit of modification.
